Singapore Elections

April24

Well it is going to be the first time that all constituencies are contested. But I am not really that keen on politics. Just hoping that mud slinging will be kept to a minimum. One characteristic about Singapore politics is that there isn’t really any defining political doctrine for each party, except for the ruling party. The rest of the party, the Opposition tends to follow that of a charismatic leader and their position on the policies decided by the leader. But I guess it is still infancy for the Opposition, they will take time to evolve their doctrine etc.

This time round, the Opposition seems to be very keen to exploit the high inflation as well as high number of foreign workers and talents. There is also talk about minimum wages etc. But their grasp on policies are still quite weak as compared to the ruling party. Can’t blame them as they don’t really have any experience in running a government. The best showing of 4 MP seats in 1991 elections is still nothing compared to the dominance of the ruling party. Interestingly we are seeing social media being exploited. That area seems to be well utilized by the Opposition as compared to the ruling party. However it is still far from certain that dominance in the social media will translate into actual votes on polling day.
