逍遥游
Louis Cha mentioned the above in his martial arts novels, 倚天屠龙记 and 天龙八部 with regards to 逍遥游. In the former, the hero’s parents were marooned on an island described aptly in 逍遥游 whereas in the latter,
北冥神功 has its namesake from 北冥.
summed up the 道 philosophy in the 12 characters.

The Han Dynasty used the teachings of 道家 in the ruling of their empire in stark contrast to the Qin Dynasty from which it displaced. Qin Dynasty’s foundation was built upon Legalism or 法家. In the post Spring and Autumn era, where all pillars of society were in decay, 法家 served to unit the society and restore order and law. But the rigidity of Legalism gave rise to rebellions when the First Emperor deceased. When the Han forces first took over the Qin’s territory, 萧何 had only three laws, 约法三章. 杀人者死,伤人及盗抵罪. Those who murdered will be executed, those who injured or steal from others will be punished. The lax laws were in absolute contrast to Qin’s Legalism. This was bearing in mind that after the harsh rule of Qin, the population needs to recuperate.
Rules and regulations are dependent on the situation at that time.
顺水推舟, 无为而治.
was suited to the situation at the end of the Qin’s reign.
Just as in life, there is no absolute right or wrong. A lot depends on the circumstances of the times. 逍遥游 to be free from all shackles of society, just wondering how many of us can achieve this or is willing to achieve this.
The Wu Emperor of Han was notoriously compared to the First Emperor of Qin. 秦始汉武 is normally used to describe despots. The China production of 汉武大帝 tried to put 武帝 in as best a light as they can, but failed miserably. They still had to admit a lot of his wrongs that caused an empire that was so rich that rice rotted in granary to become a society of humans eating humans at the end of his rule.
